About Ellington Airport
A joint use civil/military airport, Ellington Field was acquired by the City of Houston in 1984 and now supports the operations of the United States military, NASA, and a variety of general aviation tenants. The airport is home to the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow and is also the place where many of the astronauts from the world-renowned Johnson Space Center receive their ongoing space training.

History/Role of EFD
Ellington Field is a joint use civil/military airport. Established during World War I, Ellington served as a training base for pilots, bombardiers, and radio operators. The base was razed by fire and closed in the late 1920s but rebuilt at the outset of World War II as a training base. Ellington became Ellington Air Force Base in 1947 and continued as a training base for U.S. Air Force navigators. Deactivated in 1976 as a training base, Ellington continued to host the Texas Air National Guard.
