Existing Conditions at EFD… Located within the City of Houston , Ellington is approximately 20 miles southeast of the downtown area. The Airport is bordered on the southeast side by Clear Lake City and is within one mile of the south edge of Pasadena . Occupying approximately 2,200 acres, the Ellington site includes two air carrier runways, one runway for smaller aircraft, approximately 94 acres of general aviation area, and 258 acres controlled by the on-Airport military units and NASA. Additionally, there are approximately 200,000 square feet of aircraft storage hangars, and about 60,000 square feet of office space (aviation- and nonaviation-related). Ellington is close to two highways – Beltway 8 (approximately one-half mile north of main Airport entrance) and Interstate I-45 (approximately one mile west of main Airport entrance). State Highway 3 provides immediate access along the western Airport perimeter. An existing rail line borders the west side of the Airport, running between State Highway 3 and the Ellington property. The Airport has a well developed utility network, especially to the west of the airfield. The City, after acquiring the property, also installed new or upgraded facilities along Brantley Avenue and Aerospace Boulevard. |
